A Meru-bound matatu and a saloon car were involved in a tragic accident at Kirubia in Chuka along the Nairobi-Meru Highway Thursday evening.
The matatu was coming from Nairobi and headed to Meru when it was involved in the accident.
Speaking to the media at Chuka general hospital, Tharaka Nithi county Head of rescue team Alex Mugambi said that 16 passengers who were severely injured have escaped death narrowly after the horrifying incident and were being treated at the hospital.
Mugambi noted that among them were students going home for the short holiday.
“Some have fractured legs and hands, others with burns caused by the water from the radiator and among them were three high school students going home for the short holidays and we are doing the follow up to inform their parents but no one has died,” Mugambi said.
Mugambi has urged drivers to be careful at all times and especially during this school closing period when most people are travelling to their homes.
Mugambi reminded residents to continue using the toll-free numbers to contact the rescue team in case of an emergency.
