Authorities in Laikipia County have sent a stern warning to politicians that action would be taken against them if found inciting youth to cause chaos as the country heads to August 9 general elections.
Speaking to the media at his Nanyuki town office, Laikipia County Commissioner Joseph Kanyiri said any politician with ill intention of destabilizing peace would not be spared.
“We have taken note of candidates who are likely to disrupt peace. We are doing an investigation and once we gather enough evidence, legal action will be taken against them,” said Kanyiri.
The CC was referring to the weekend political meeting in Laikipia that saw five youth arrested and arraigned before court for disrupting a political meeting.
However, they were released on Sh 5,000 cash bail pending hearing on their case on a later date.
He urged politicians to preach peace and at the same time ask their supporters not to cause chaos during political meetings.
“Youth had carried pangas and rungus aimed at causing chaos at a certain political meeting, however, police arrested them. We call on politicians not to incite youth to cause chaos,” said the CC.
Soon after they were cleared to contest by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), political candidates seeking various elective seats in Laikipia county signed a code of conduct to foster peace before, during and after elections.
