The man who was recorded assaulting a woman in a video that went viral was arraigned before Siaya Magistrate Court and charged with the offense.
The man identified as Justus Oduor Okong’o 24, is facing charges of assaulting Emaculate Akinyi in Nyadorera in Siaya County. The accused denied the charges before Siaya Magistrate Margaret Wamban.
The case was set for hearing on July 19th 2021 although there were prospects that the case could be settled out of court under the watch of a local chief who is expected to report back to court if it materialized to a logical conclusion.
Akinyi the woman being beaten in the video that circulated on social media said that Oduor assaulted her while a friend of his was recording using a handset.
“He came to my house and began beating me, I struggled to free myself from the blows that he threw towards me, however he overpowered me and went on to cause me physical harm,” said Akinyi.
After the incident, Akinyi reported the matter to Nyadorera police post and Oduor had been on the run ever since the video of his attack went viral on social media. He was arrested by the police in Nakuru while fleeing the wrath of the law and brought to Siaya where the act was committed and reported to face the charges.
Siaya Sub-County Police Commander Benard Mwangangi said that the police launched a man hunt and finally arrested him in Nakuru where he was hiding.
“The police have been looking for him ever since the incident was reported and yesterday the police managed to arrest him in Nakuru. He will face the full force of the law,” said the sub-county police boss.
The video elicited outrage on social media and with many calling on the police to ensure that the suspect is apprehended without delays.
