The National Hygiene Programme (NHP) commonly referred to as Kazi Mtaani in Trans Nzoia county has been engaging youths in several activities, aimed at promoting peaceful campaigns ahead of forthcoming General Election.
A total of 1500 youths drawn from all the five sub counties listed into the programme have engaged in communal activities, including general cleaning assignments within public buildings and spaces, tree planting, football tournaments and peace walks.
Speaking to KNA Tuesday, Assistant County Commissioner (ACC) Tima Omar said the overall objective for the current NHP cycle was to engage the youth in productive activities during this electioneering season.
“Besides engaging them in communal activities, the programme provided an opportunity for the youth to involve themselves in social activities, such as sports and peace walks, whose main aim was to spread messages of peace ahead of the August 9 national poll,” said Tima.
The ACC accused politicians of exploiting innocent and jobless youths by enrolling them into criminal activities during electioneering periods,” hence the reason the government decided to avert such through NHP,” added Tima.
She explained through sports activities, the youth acquire important social values and principles, including respect for one another, the essence of teamwork, problem solving, conflict resolution, fair play and resilience.
As Kenyans head to the ballot next Tuesday, the ACC appealed to youths in Trans Nzoia to uphold the prevailing peace during and after the poll.
She at the same time advised the local electorate to elect leaders with high integrity, capable of steering the county’s economic growth and development to the highest level.
