An official of a climate change up civil society organization (CSOs) in Homa-Bay County has challenged the elite in the county to come with new programmes to promote rights of teenage girls at the grassroots level.

Achieng Leone Otieno who is an Organizing secretary of a CSO said programmes should be developed to fight retrogressive practices that impede education of young girls.

She said her organization has requested the professionals to develop strategies of engaging adolescent girls to enable them to understand their rights.

She said that the CSO wants the elite to educate and empower teenage girls with important information on how to defend their rights. “Girls must have their rights to education, good health and social wellbeing protected,” Achieng said.

She stressed that girls who are in school ought to know their rights, why they are in school and why education is important.

She said that the county is experiencing high teenage pregnancies, high HIV prevalence and high school dropout rate amongst girls. “We need to develop interventions to reverse high teenage pregnancies, high HIV prevalence as well as dropping out of school,” she said.
