22-year-old found guilty of uncle’s murder

Siaya High Court today found Kevin Owuor Abith alias Opudo, a resident of Uhwaya village in Yimbo location in Bondo Sub County in Siaya, guilty of murdering his maternal uncle Willys Owuor.

The 22-year-old form four dropout committed the offense on 6th January 2021 at their home in Got Agulu sub-location where he had been living with the deceased.

According to a witness statement provided by the deceased’s son, Opudo was drunk on that evening at around 10 pm when he forcefully broke into one of the houses in the homestead belonging to their grandmother attempting to move some furniture which prompted an altercation between him and his uncle.

It was during this altercation that Opudo assaulted the deceased hitting him severally with a metal crutch and stepping on his head before leaving, only for the uncle to succumb to his injuries shortly after.

In her ruling, Justice Roselyn Aburili cited that the convict merits a non-custodial sentence to be reintegrated into the community which is willing to accommodate him because of his past good behaviour save for the murder incident.

The accused was sentenced to serve three years’ probation, one of which shall be served at the Nairobi Probation Hostel for him to be rehabilitated and counseled.
