Police investigate sudden death of school principal in Nyamira

Police in Nyamira South Sub County are investigating the sudden death of Our Lady of Mercy Rangenyo Girls Secondary School principal, Lydia Onyoni which occurred yesterday evening at a hospital in Kisii.

Nyamira South Sub County Police Commander, Moses Kirong, while confirming the incident to KNA said he received a phone call at around 9:30pm yesterday from Father Benard Nyangeri of Rangenyo Parish informing him that Our Lady of Mercy Rangenyo Girls Secondary school principal, Mrs. Lydia Onyoni was found unconscious in her bedroom at 7pm.

“She was rushed to Kisii Oasis Hospital where she was attended to until around 8pm last evening when she passed on. Her body was taken to Kisii teaching and referral hospital mortuary.” SCPC Kirong explained.

Nyamira Deputy Governor, Dr. James Gesami who visited Rangenyo Girls today to condole with the school fraternity said the incident was sudden and sad and called for calmness in the school as investigations into the incident commence.

Nyamira South Sub County Director of Education Faith Kiprono, who accompanied Dr. Gesami, said that Kenya Red Cross Officers were on standby to provide counseling services to students and staff at the school.

“The sudden death incident is very shocking and devastating but we are requesting all to be patient until investigators are concluded.” Ms. Kiprono urged.

The school Board of Management (BOM) chairperson, Margaret Raini warned parents and the community against believing in misinformation from unreliable sources over the cause of the principal’s death,” Raini assured parents and other stakeholders that the students are in good hands and will be cared for by teaching and non-staff members.

The sub-county police officer Mr. Kirong said they will release a conclusive report on the cause of the principal’s death once the autopsy is finalized.
