The Government has constructed 1,882 classrooms in the Eastern Region at a cost of Sh1.4 billion, under the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) Infrastructure Development Programme.
Regional Director of Education (RDE), Dr. William Sugut, said 1,451 classes were constructed in the First Phase of the programme, while 431 were done in the Second Phase at a cost of 788,220 per class.
Sugut said all the classes were complete in readiness for the transition of CBC learners to Junior Secondary School next year.
“We are adequately prepared for the transition. We are however waiting for directions from the government now that there is a taskforce that has been established to review CBC,” he said.
Speaking when he commissioned several CBC classrooms in Mwala Sub-county, the Regional Director reiterated government’s commitment in ensuring that learners get quality education.
“The Government has invested a lot of resources in education through various programmes like Edu Afya, provision of texts books among other programmes,” he said.
Sugut urged learners to take advantage of the programmes being offered by the government to improve their performance.
“The learners should remain focused and utilize the programmes for their benefit,” he added.
The Director also asked leaners to refrain from drug and substance abuse. Drugs will ruin your lives,” he said.
At the same time, the Director decried poor performance of sciences in local secondary schools, while underscoring the need to boost performance.
“There is need to strengthen the teaching of sciences which many students continue to perform dismally. Our teachers should equip student with skills and knowledge that will make them competitive in the country and beyond,” he noted.
