Five jumbos stray from Maasai Mara, injure one person

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers have deployed a helicopter to guide five elephants, which have caused panic among residents of Bomet East, back into the Maasai Mara game reserve.

According to Bomet East Deputy County Commissioner Joash Obongo, the five jumbos crossed into Bomet from Narok west sub-County on Monday night through Olokyin area before splitting into two groups.

Obongo said one of the jumbos remained at Mengit village while four others proceeded to Lugumek village in Chepalungu Sub-County where one of them destroyed a house and attacked a man who is currently admitted at Longisa hospital in a fair condition.

He said the elephant which staged the attack crossed over to Kipreres village in Bomet East where the KWS rangers were currently battling the animal that is said to have become aggressive.

The DCC said the rangers have successfully driven three of the elephants back into the game reserve while the two remained a challenge even as the security agencies battle to contain the local residents who have made attempts to kill the animal for meat.

Residents, especially school-going children, were frightened and most of them remained indoors after the area was filled with warning wailing sounds in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.
