The Clergy have cautioned the government against the importation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) maize before thorough research is done to substantiate any health hazards to consumers.
Maranatha Faith Assemblies of Kenya Rev Dr John Khabisae criticized the government for trying to force Kenyans to consume GMO foods without adequately doing background research to ascertain the safety if consumed by Kenyans.
“We have heard unverified information that these GMOs are the cause of some health issues like cancer among our people and we would wish that proper and scientific research be done so that we know the real truth before we take these foodstuffs,” said Khabisae.
Recently, the government through the Cabinet Secretary for Trade Moses Kuria initiated the importation of GMO maize from abroad to cushion Kenya against hunger caused by severe drought in the country.
The move caused an uproar among the netizens begging the question of what could be the reason behind the importation.
Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei led the Rift Valley members of Parliament and Senators in addressing the nation and threatened that they would move a motion in Parliament to impeach the Trade CS Moses Kuria if the President would not sack him.
However, Kuria retaliated by warning farmers to sell maize to millers in good time to stop serious hikes in maize prices across the country.
Khabisae was speaking at Kwanyoret Maranatha church in Chepalungu during the ordination of Rev Samuel Bii to the level of Bishop in Bomet South.
