Parents in Homa Bay County have been urged to be watchful of their children during this festive season to avoid cases of early teenage pregnancy that has occasioned some student during the holidays.
Chairman of Kenya National Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Homa Bay Branch Jack Okoth said it was regrettable that the county was recording 33 percent incidences of teenage pregnancies.
He challenged the parents in the county to closely watch the behaviour and the movements of their children as a way of curbing early pregnancy cases.
“Be role models to your children during this festive season and always advise them to embrace going to churches to mould them in the right direction,” said Okoth.
Speaking KNA today, Okoth warned the students to shun drug abuse and other vices during the long holiday in order to realize their dreams.
He advised the students against illicit sexual activities especially vulnerable girls who do it in exchange for cash that they use to purchase sanitary towels.
KUPPET Executive Secretary Stephen Yogo lauded the Presidential Working Party on Education Reform tasked with reviewing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) for the decision of making the junior secondary to remain domicile in primary schools.
Yogo however advised the government to construct enough classrooms and laboratories to serve the CBC learners adequately.
The secretary stated that CBC is about acquiring skills and teachers should have qualifications of at least diploma and above.
“Techers handling the junior secondary learners should be well acquainted with skills right from the colleges,” said Yogo.
He also advised teachers within the county who are members of KUPPET to become proactive and seek help from the union whenever they are in trouble with the employer.
“At the moment you sense that you’re about to be disciplined, please bring it to the attention of the union to advise you. Do not defend yourself because we have specialists who can help you,” Yogo stated.
The official promised their members that their welfare is well taken care of, and they’re working on ways of ensuring that teachers’ parents are also included in the Burial Benevolent Fund (BBF) program.
