Residents of Nanyuki town in Laikipia County have been sensitized on the importance of tree planting as a way of combating the effects of climate change in line with the government’s target of planting at least 15 billion trees by the year 2032.
Laikipia county commissioner Joseph Kanyiri took the residents through a session on how to improve forest cover and ensure the newly planted seedlings survive to maturity time.
“We are here to fulfil President Dr. William Ruto’s directive about tree planting and we have trained residents on how to plant trees and the importance of maintaining the culture to achieve our goal,” Kanyiri told journalists at Likii primary school in Nanyuki during a tree planting exercise.
The county commissioner noted that tree planting was not a government project alone but called on various stakeholders to chip in saying such initiatives would also create job opportunities for both youth and women.
Kanyiri further pointed out that local administration would keep training residents on the best tree species to plant in dry and wet areas for their suitability.
Government is also keen on rehabilitating and restoring 10.6 million hectares in selected areas across the country in bid to contain ravages of climate change.
Kanyiri at the same time said security was beefed ahead of the festive season and urged relevant agencies to intensify patrol to counter possible breach of peace during the period.
He warned that those found breaking the law will be arrested and charged.
Kanyiri also urged parents to be wary of the movements and engagements of their children to ensure they do not end up with the bad company involved in bad activities during the festive season.
