China Embassy in Kenya Backs Chinese Traders Amid Protests

The Chinese Embassy in Kenya has expressed support for the operations of Chinese enterprises and citizens in Kenya following protests by local traders against China Square Mall. In a statement shared on its official Twitter page, the Embassy noted that it supports deepening trade and investment cooperation between the two countries, and supports Chinese entities operating in compliance with Kenyan laws and regulations. The statement also urged the Kenyan government to protect the rights of its citizens, while creating an inclusive and friendly business environment. On Tuesday, February 28, hundreds of Kenyan traders held demonstrations in Nairobi’s central business district, accusing Chinese traders of taking over the local market by offering goods at extremely low prices. The traders claimed that the foreign traders were both manufacturers and sellers, a role that should be reserved for local players. The protests come after the temporary closure of China Square Mall, a large store on Thika Superhighway that offers goods at discounted prices.
