In honour of Earth Day, Google has released data showing the top sustainability-related trends in Kenya. The information suggests that Kenyans have a growing interest in environmental issues as they search for answers to pressing global challenges. The search engine has revealed a list of questions frequently asked by Kenyans, such as “What is global warming?” and “What is the Paris Agreement?” It has also highlighted the top trending topics, including soil contamination, which is particularly relevant to the country’s agricultural sector. Kenyans are also actively searching for information on environmental, social, and corporate governance, highlighting a shift towards responsible business practices.
According to the International Red Cross, Kenya’s worst drought in 40 years affected over 23 million people, about 40% of the population, causing widespread food insecurity, livestock deaths, and displacement. The data highlights Kenya’s growing awareness and commitment to sustainability and environmental protection as the country faces unique challenges in combating climate change, such as droughts and soil contamination. As climate change is one of humanity’s most urgent challenges, Google Kenya’s Country Director, Agnes Gathaiya, emphasises that Earth Month is an opportunity for individuals and collective action. By providing accessible information on environmental topics, Google hopes to empower Kenyans to take action towards a more sustainable future.
