A woman in court for aiding teenage to terminate pregnancy

A 40-year old woman today appeared in Loitoktok court for allegedly aiding a teenage girl to procure an abortion.

Martha Mumbua appeared before Principal Magistrate Judicaster Nthuku, charged that on the 9th of October this year at Enkareronkena village in Loitokitok Sub-County, Kajiado County she willingly and unlawfully issued drugs to the 16 years old girl to procure abortion.

Francis Nana, a clinical officer at Loitokitok sub-county hospital testified in court that on 11th October 2022 at around 9:30pm, a 16-year-old girl was brought to the health facility.

Nana added that after doing some tests to the patient, he found that she was in pain and administered painkillers.

The clinical officer further said that on 16th the same month, the girl came back to the hospital where it was discovered she had procured an abortion and was complaining of having a headache and abdominal pain.

The complainant who is a form 2 student at Koringo secondary school in Loitokitok sub-county, testified that on 9th October 2022 she was in pain and upon reaching home since she’s a day scholar she informed her grandmother about her pain.

The complainant added that she was taken to the hospital the following day by her aunt, Mumbua and she was treated, and at the same time she was bleeding. It was alleged that her Aunt had administered drugs with an intention of procuring abortion to the minor.

Stephen Maluti, a village elder for Enkareronkena locality said he had received report that community was planning to demonstrate against Mumbua who reportedly had aided four underage minors to abort.

Upon receiving the complaints, Maluti reported the matter to the police station for action to be taken. The accused was arrested and escorted to Loitoktok police station before being arraigned in court where she denied the allegations.

The court has adjourned the case until 30th January 2023 for further hearing.
