In a major victory for anti-piracy efforts on the African continent, an ISP in Mombasa,
Kenya was successfully raided by a team from DAPA NETWORKS.
The ISP, which had 567 customers, was found to be actively engaged in internet
streaming piracy by supplying premium sports content without exclusive rights.
The raid was conducted with the support of the Kenyan Police, Kenyan Cyber Police,
and Kenya Copyright Board officers and officials.
According to sources, the ISP in question, DAPA NETWORKS, was providing
Multichoice (DStv) content through IPTV subscription without the proper rights.
IPTV is an over-the-top (OTT) channel that offers a variety of channels, including CNN
and top-tier league sports.
The company was also found to be coupling internet supply with IPTV as an add-on
service to its customers.
Intelligence gathered from various sources linked the company to a Facebook page
called Gabriel Mobile Technologies, which is also an IT firm based in Mombasa.
Both Gabriel Mobile Technologies and Dapa Networks share similar phone numbers
and server images on their online profiles.
As a result of the raid, the control panel of the ISP was taken down, and all customers no
longer have access to the illegal content.
This is a significant victory for anti-piracy efforts and a strong message to other ISPs
and companies engaging in illegal streaming activities.
