Most schools in Kiambu have completed the syllabus and are ready for the national exams.
The exams that are underway for the 2022 final year exams for grade 6, Class 8 and Form 4 students are set to run from the 28th of November 2022 to 23rd December 2022.
Kiambu township primary headmaster John Mwania said they have been using different methodologies such as adopting discussion groups as part of revision, as well as using the already established chalk and talk method in order to ensure that all is set and that the students are well prepared.
Speaking to KNA today, Mwania said the CBC curriculum is not the same as the previous 8-4-4 system which included revision papers and mock exams to help students familiarize with the structure and questions.
“The first batch of CBC students are set to face their final assessment this year which, unlike the 8-4-4 system, constitutes a percentage of the summarized exams taken throughout the years before university,” he said.
Anderson Muthama, Headmaster at St. James primary Kiambu acknowledged that despite the preparations, they have had a challenge with the CBC when it comes to teaching and they have had to cope with
“We continue to inform parents on how they can properly assist their children even though they may not always have the resources available to do so. We are lucky because most of the parents are enlightened which helps although some still hold hope that the old system will return to ease some of the pressures,” he said.
Roselyn Litaba the Kiambu Sub County Director of Education confirmed that schools in Kiambu are set for the exams and that they are laying the groundwork to receive examination papers when the time comes.
She acknowledged that although the implementation of the CBC has had its fair share of challenges due to lack of preparation and also limited CBC trainers available to educate the teachers, they are on the right track and have been coping.
“We will make sure that the containers used to house the examination papers are in a good state and also hold an induction for all teachers involved,” Litaba said.
The integration of the CBC curriculum has not been a smooth process as the public has expressed confusion with regard to understanding the system while others have also come out to criticize the government on its implementation calling out for reforms.
After the end year exams, the January 2023 cycle will run normally as the typical school calendar will go back to its usual schedule since the disruption by the Covid 19 pandemic in 2020.
Kiambu has 1373 total schools, 1045 primary schools and 328 secondary schools.
