The county government of Kisumu has received a Sh. 20 million donation worth of medical equipment from the Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) to boost health care in public facilities.
This follows a memorandum of Understanding signed between the county government and AKHS to strengthen health systems in Kisumu.
Biosafety cabinets, microscopes, laboratory refrigerators, autoclaves, 201 banquet seats, 90 conference tables and filing cabinets were handed over to the county government.
Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. George Rae who received the donation on behalf of Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang Nyong’o lauded the initiative saying it will help better health services in the area.
Speaking during the handing over ceremony held at Aga Khan Primary School, Dr. Rae said the equipment shall be distributed to health facilities across the county.
Besides the donation, he said, the partnership will also build capacity for health care professionals through training.
Aga Khan Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jane Wanyama said since the inception of the programme 359 health care professionals in Kisumu have undergone specialized training.
Out of the number, she disclosed 75 have received training on advanced cardiac life support while the remaining 284 have been trained on basic life support.
To enhance access to quality healthcare, Wanyama said the programme will be expanded to cover Bungoma, Busia, Migori and Kisii counties.
