The river Nzoia bridge linking Ugenya and Ugunja sub counties has been closed for motorists after a gaping hole developed in the middle of the century old bridge.
Motorists will now be forced to use longer routes to connect to either side of the river, as the Kenya National Highways Authority engineers work on the bridge
Confirming the closure, Siaya county commissioner, Jim Njoka said that the decision to close the bridge was taken after engineers from KeNHA and other government officials visited it following an outcry in the social media.
Njoka urged local residents and motorists to abide by the new regulations, adding that the government was working round the clock to ensure it re-opens within the next two weeks.
In a notice to the public, the government urged motorists heading to Ukwala from Ugunja to connect through Ligega or Sega, while those with business in Ukwala from Siaya are urged to use the Siaya- Rwambwa-Ukwala route.
