Kenyan Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary, Alfred Mutua, has ignited discussions on social media after announcing Kenya’s plan to send food aid to Turkey in the aftermath of a recent earthquake. The announcement drew mixed reactions from Kenyans on Twitter (KOT), who pointed out the issue of hunger in some parts of the country and argued that charity should begin at home.
Despite the criticism, Mutua remained firm in his stance, emphasizing Kenya’s responsibility to lend a hand to the affected nations. He also urged Kenyans to support the initiative by donating food, clothing, medical supplies, and finances. Mutua stated that collection points for the donated items would be communicated in the coming days.
In a joint press briefing with the Turkish Ambassador to Kenya, Mutua expressed Kenya’s solidarity with Turkey and Syria and shared their pain after the devastating earthquake that claimed over 5,000 lives. He confirmed that no Kenyans were affected by the disaster and that the Foreign Affairs Ministry was in constant communication with the Kenyan Embassy in Turkey for updates.
