About 700 members of the Kenya Universities Staff Union (Kusu) Egerton University branch have threatened to down their tools if the institution council fails to clear their salary arrears running into millions of shillings.
The Kenya University Staff Union national secretary general Dr. Charles Mukhwaya said the union had already issued a seven-day strike notice over the unpaid salaries.
Dr. Mukhwaya further said they had served the employer and the government through the labour ministry with the notice of strike over the arrears, most of which dates back to the year 2020.
The official said the University council must start paying the staff a 100 per cent of their salaries with immediate effect as opposed to the current situation where they were being paid in bits.
The union also demanded that the university staff be paid their accumulated salary arrears without further delay.
While addressing the press in Nakuru, Mukhwaya told the council to reinstate and respect the staff negotiated terms and conditions of service as contained in the internal Collective Bargaining Agreement.
The union at the same time, wants the university to negotiate and conclude the 2013/2017 internal CBA that has been pending for over seven years.
Dr. Mukhwaya warned that if no action is taken to address the four grievances within the seven days, the staff members will have no option, but to down their tools from this Wednesday.
“We shall exercise our constitutional right to go on strike without further notice,” said Dr Mukhwaya.
Egerton University has been experiencing financial troubles for the last ten years and has been unable to pay its workers full salaries and other statutory deductions amounting to over Sh6 billion.
