Fire razes dormitory at St Luke’s boys’ high school

A huge fire broke out in one of the dormitories at St Luke Kimilili Boys High School in Bungoma on Monday evening and destroyed property of unknown value.

School Principal Innocent Siro said the incident occurred at around 5:40 pm when students were out for evening games.

The dormitory, christened Nabwana South, houses 170 boys.

School authorities are yet to determine the exact cause of the fire.

Fire fighters from the County government, students, neighbours, teachers and police officers arrived at the institution and made frantic efforts to help put out the fire.

They used sand, twigs, water and other readily available materials and only managed to put the inferno off and prevent the fire from spreading to other buildings but could not salvage students’ property inside the burning building.

Mr Siro added that all the boys are safe despite the small injuries they sustained while putting off the fire.

According to Kimilili Sub county police Commander Mwita Maroa , the cause of the fire is still unknown but hinted at possible arson.

He said that police have however launched investigations to establish the cause.

This is not the first time fire is breaking out at the school.

A source said that the students are unhappy with one of the deputy principals whom they say is harsh and want him transferred.
