Members of the Orange Democratic Movement in Gem constituency are calling on the party to suspend the area member of parliament Elisha Ochieng Odhiambo. for allegedly undermining the party in the area.
According to the members, the legislator should not only be disciplined but must also be de-whipped from all national assembly committees.
Led by Collins Ong’wen and Chris Nyawir Odero, the members who addressed the media after a meeting in Gem accused the legislator of defying party position and campaigning for the opponents of the ODM.
“He de-campaigned and championed the ideals of other entities, parties and individuals contrary to the regulations of the ODM party” said a statement read to the media after the meeting.
The officials who included Emily Anyango and Elijah Odinga said that the legislator had also arbitrarily dissolved the party branch and handpicked his cronies to manage the Gem branch, adding that there was need for the party to ensure that all the suspended party officials are reinstated back to their positions.
They said that they were in support of an initiative by a section of Gem constituents to kick off the process of recalling the MP, Elisha Ochieng Odhiambo.
Ong’wen at the same time called on the legislator to stop issuing threats and ultimatums to Siaya governor, James Orengo to pick a person to fill the position of the County Secretary from Gem constituency.
He said that the governor must be given a free hand to nominate any qualified person from any part of Siaya.
Gem MP, Elisha Odhiambo has in the recent past called on governor Orengo to appoint a person from Gem as the county secretary, warning that anything short of that would see the constituency review its position.
Odhiambo, who has declared interest in the ODM secretary general’s post, said that should Orengo fail to fulfill his demand, then he is likely to face the former senate minority leader during the 2027 general elections.
