Google Arts & Culture has launched an online exhibition, “Maasai: Wisdom of a Community,” to showcase the cultural heritage of the Maasai community in Kenya.
The digital archive, comprising over 430 high-resolution images and 55 exhibits, features five exhibits on the community and its legends by the National Museums of Kenya.
Visitors can learn about the Maasai way of life, such as the symbolism behind Maasai jewelry, sustainable architectural practices, and the Maa language.
The project was a collaboration between Google Arts & Culture, non-profit Project Fuel, and the National Museums of Kenya.
Agnes Gathaiya, the Country Director for Google in Eastern Africa, encouraged people to learn about the Maasai and their culture. The initiative was praised by Tourism Cabinet Secretary Peninah Malonza as an example of the digitization of African history and how it can preserve culture and heritage while increasing tourism interest.
The exhibition also includes seven exhibits on Maasai mythology and folklore and 29 illustrations created by Indian artist Advithi Emmi.
