Leaders urged to support Education

Busia County Commissioner, Sam Ojwang’, has urged the local leaders to support the Education sector in the area.

Speaking to mourners during the burial ceremony of the late Assistant Chief, Sylvester Amuku, of Olepito Sub-location in Teso South Sub-county Friday, Ojwang expressed concern over the poor performance of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates during the year 2021.

“I want to urge professionals and local leaders to support education, our schools both primary and secondary are performing poorly,” he said.

He pointed out that more than 50 percent of learners who sat for KSCE in 2021 attained the grade of D and below.

‘More than 100 candidates recorded X,” he said, adding that it’s only Education that will help improve the livelihoods of the locals.

At the same time, the County Commissioner noted that the County also has a high poverty level of more than 60 percent.

“Leaders and professionals should unite and fight against poverty,” he said, adding that students who pursue practical courses will be able to engage in self-employment.

The General Manager, Gerald Ouma, of Olepito Sugar Factory urged the residents of Teso South to embrace sugarcane farming as an economic venture.

“Part of what we do here is empowerment of the community and this has made a number of cane farmers get school fees for their children”, he said.

Ouma advised cane farmers to be careful not to be misled by individuals who come up with factories without proper planning to harvest immature cane.

“This is your investment and as an economist, I tell you that harvesting immature cane will lead to great losses on your part,” he said, adding that farmers should be patient and ensure that their cane grows to maturity.

The late Assistant Chief Amuku was eulogized as a humble, peace loving and development focused person.

He served in the position for four years before his passing on.
