A 22-year-old man from the Mosiro area in Narok East Sub County drowned on Tuesday while swimming with his friend at River Siayabei.
While confirming the incident, Narok County police boss Kizito Mutoro said the boy had gone swimming with his friend in the afternoon at the river when he dived and got stuck inside the muddy water.
When the friend noticed he was sinking in the mud, he tried to rescue him unsuccessfully as he continued to submerge in the muddy area.
The friend then alerted the neighbors who called the police to save the situation but unfortunately, it was too late as the young man had completely submerged in the muddy water.
The police worked with Kenya Red Cross divers to retrieve the lifeless body which was taken to Narok County Referral Hospital morgue. The police boss said no visible injury was seen on the body.
The county police commander warned residents against crossing swollen rivers or going swimming in flooded rivers during this season of high downpours.
“People should be extremely careful during this rainy season so that we can avoid death. No one should swim in rivers as the water volume can increase anytime which could lead to deaths,” he warned.
Parents too were warned against sending their children to the marketplaces during late evening hours as most parts are experiencing storms, thunder, and lightning.
The meteorological department has predicted increased rainfall during this season of short rains, which will be fairly distributed throughout the county.
