Mau Mau fighters from Mwala Sub-County have thrown their weight behind the Azimio la Umoja alliance saying it was best poised to deliver the country from the shackles of poor governance.
The fighters termed the Raila Odinga and Martha Karua ticket as progressive and reformist.
Led by the Chair Johnson Kiiti, the Mau Mau veterans said Raila and Karua’s record for fighting for freedom and democracy speaks for itself and the two are best suited to steer the country to great heights.
“Both Raila and Karua are known to be strong defenders of democracy and freedom. They should be allowed to lead this country,” added Kiiti.
Speaking to the press yesterday at Makutano, the freedom fighters castigated Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka for leaving the Azimio alliance and asked him to reconsider his decision.
They said Kalonzo’s departure was an act of betrayal as he had pledged to unconditionally support Raila’s presidential bid for the third time.
“He should not have left Azimio. It was a wrong move and he should go back. Those advising Kalonzo are misleading him,” added the Mau Mau chair.
Josephine Njeri, also a freedom fighter, backed the nomination of Karua as Raila’s running mate saying the move is a win for Kenyan women. “The time is ripe for women to take up the leadership of this country,” said Njeri.
She expressed her optimism that once they ascend to presidency, the two will recognise the role played by Mau Mau fighters in the quest for freedom and reward them accordingly.
“They have fought for freedom and it’s our hope that they will remember what Mau Mau fighters did for this country,” she said.
