People with Disabilities should be given a chance to nominate their own to fill positions of special interest groups in both the National, Senate and County assemblies.
Nominated Member of Kakamega County Assembly Lucie Chogo said despite the constitution provision of nominees to represent special interest groups, those nominated by political parties fail to support PWDs.
“This is a clear indication that those nominated take little interest to understand the challenges facing PWDs to rise up and help them,” she noted.
She also said some of those representing special interest groups overstay in the county, national assembly and the Senate instead of giving others a chance.
Chogo also asked President William Ruto to appoint a Person with Disability to the position of leadership in his government.
“I am disappointed that we lack representation of a PWD either in the Cabinet Secretary position or Principal Secretary positions yet they are learned and qualified to offer leadership,” she noted.
The Chairperson of Kakamega County Disability Caucus Lucy Mulombi also asked Governor Fernandes Barasa to include an advisor on issues of disability in his administration who will be in touch with PWDs for their challenges to be addressed.
“We want opportunities for employment and during appointments,” she noted. She called for collaboration among all stakeholders to stem stigmatization of PWDs in the society.
