Meru County Commissioner Fred Ndunga on Wednesday, led his security team, county election preparedness committee, officials from the county government, and residents in Imenti North in a walk to campaign for a peaceful upcoming election.
Speaking at Gakoromone market, the County Commissioner urged the traders and other residents to spread the gospel of peace to their families and neighbors once they get home in order to enhance a peaceful electioneering period.
He further urged political aspirants to take charge of their followers to ensure they do not cause violence in political rallies lest they will take the blame.
“For the political leaders, you are going to be responsible for your supporters’ careless actions, in case they cause violence be sure that our security machinery will go after you,” Ndunga said, urging the aspirants to preach peace in every place they go to sell their agenda.
He also called on the citizens to avoid rallies held by leaders they differ with politically and if they have to they should go there peacefully without chanting utterances that are likely to cause chaos.
Ndunga noted that the County has enough security personnel who are prepared to deal with anything that may compromise security in the region. He also promised to provide security to all contenders with special consideration given to women candidates due to their vulnerability.
He said that women should be respected by everybody and warned citizens and aspirants against harassing them.
He advised residents to go home or back to their daily businesses after they vote on August 9 and wait for the results adding that they will allow a specific number of members of the public in the tallying centers to avoid chaos.
In attendance were the administration officers including chiefs, sub-chiefs, assistant county commissioners, and deputy county commissioners from across the county who vowed to hold the same events in their respective areas.
Meru county chief of staff Mr. Jotham Kirimi who represented the county government said Governor Kiraitu Murungi who is seeking reelection was committed to preaching and keeping peace before, during, and after elections.
