A Murang’a water company has in the recent past incurred huge losses due to increased vandalism and theft of water fittings causing disruption of water supply to customers.
Management of Murang’a Water and Sanitation Company (Muwasco) has claimed the firm in the last two and half months has lost water fittings and pipes worth Sh. 1.2 million.
The company’s Managing Director Engineer Daniel Ng’ang’a, says the people behind the theft are targeting digital meters, air valves among other fittings saying some homes have been subjected to water shortage due to the crime.
He said those perpetuating the crime are sometimes purporting to be employees of the company who are on a mission to repair water infrastructure.
On Wednesday Ng’ang’a confirmed that one person was arrested at Gaitega village near Murang’a town while removing water pipes alongside accomplices who managed to escape.
“Members of Nyumba Kumi assisted by the area chief Wednesday morning managed to arrest one person as others escaped. They were digging and removing water pipes. Already the suspect is awaiting to be taken to court. “We laud the members of the community who are informing us about the theft. This will help to stop disruption of water supply,” added Ng’ang’a.
The Director stated that the company has been organizing forums with members of the community, boda boda operators and even using churches to create awareness about the increased theft of water equipment.
“We also offer awards to those who inform us of vandalism of our equipment. The crime is causing the company to incur huge losses thus need concerted efforts to curb it,” he said.
The areas mentioned as notorious for theft and vandalism of water fittings include Maragi, St. Mary’s and Gaitega.
The director asked residents to first confirm those claiming to be employees of the company before they allow them to read water meters or do any other repairs.
“Our employees must have a staff identity card, a badge and always be in uniform when they are at work. I appeal to our customers to report to us anyone who visits their premises and suspect is not one of our workers,” he urged.
He said together with members of Nyumba Kumi they will be vigilant to stop the crime, asking police to ensure full trial of those already arrested.
