Traders and residents of Makueni County are will profit from the upgrading of Mukuyuni and Sultan Hamud Markets.
Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior said the move is part of a solution to improving the livelihood of the residents of Makueni.
“We are in discussion on the upgrading of Mukuyuni and Sultan Hamud Markets in a bid to improve the livelihood of the people of Makueni,” said Kilonzo during the inaugural address to Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) on Tuesday at the assembly chambers in Wote town.
He said his administration is committed to transforming markets into business centers in order to upscale sources of revenue.
“Urban areas remain key centers and nodes of growth. Our interventions are meant to improve livability in the urban areas by providing the requisite infrastructure and basic services,” said the Governor.
Mutula said he will seek partnership with the National government in building road infrastructure, electricity, and ICT networks in both rural and urban centers to foster development.
“Quality infrastructure enables and contributes to economic growth and development by reducing costs of production and providing market access to farmers,” he added.
Mutula disclosed that his administration is engaging with development partners to help in the planning of the major towns of Kibwezi, Makindu, Emali, Sultan Hamud, and Mtito Andei.
He said transferring several functions from County Government functions to Wote Municipality is part of the milestone his administration has achieved.
“I transferred several functions to the Board of Wote Municipality. This was gazetted and soon we shall be submitting to this house the Emali/Sultan Hamud municipality charter for approval,” said Kilonzo.
He said the move is geared towards better management of municipalities hence attracting investors.
Mutula reiterated his commitment to fixing the water problem, sanitation issues, and waste management in the municipalities promising to fast-track the pending budget and approvals for the town.
“We must fix the water problem, sanitation issues, and waste management urgently,” he added.
He said when every household has access to adequate balanced food, and clean and safe water, it will reduce a large number of health cases in hospitals.
