A police officer was on Friday morning shot dead during a shootout with an armed robber in Pap Onditi area in Nyakach, Kisumu County.
Two other police officers suffered injuries and are recuperating at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH).
According to the Nyakach Sub-County Police Commander Daniel Chacha, a team of detectives from DCI Nyanza went to Troy Apartments at Pap Onditi after a tipoff about a gangster who is believed to have committed a series of robberies in Kisumu, Homa Bay and Migori counties resided.
Police say when the suspect sensed he was in danger he started shooting indiscriminately at the officers from the second floor of his rented house and amidst the melee, two officers managed to escape the scene with gunshot wounds on the left hand, thigh and chest, and are currently recuperating at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The body of the deceased has been taken to Star Mortuary pending an autopsy. Chacha said Police have launched investigations and an operation is underway to arrest the suspect.
