Smiling from heaven: Catherine Kasavili immortalized

In honor of the late celebrated Kenyan journalist Catherine Kasavuli, several media
organizations have announced plans to establish a scholarship in her name to support
young journalists who wish to pursue a career in the media industry.
Kasavuli, who passed away on Friday, December 30, 2022, after a long battle with
cancer, was known for her brilliance in news presentation and wordplay during live
television broadcasts. She had a successful career in the media industry, working for
various media houses including Royal Media Services (RMS), Standard Group PLC
(SGL) and Kenya Broadcast Corporation (KBC).
During her tenure at RMS, Kasavuli achieved much in her professional career, including
recognition by the state. Former President Mwai Kibaki, in 2008, feted Kasavuli with
the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) Presidential Award in recognition of her effort
in the media industry.

After leaving RMS in 2015, she established her own company known as Kasavuli Media
Group. She later rejoined KBC as a news anchor in 2021 after a 7-year hiatus.
Kasavuli’s colleagues and friends described her as a mentor and role model, who always
had time to share her wealth of knowledge and experience with the younger members of
the team. They also praised her for her dedication to her work and her unwavering
commitment to journalistic excellence.
The scholarship in her name will be open to young journalists who wish to pursue a
career in the media industry, with a focus on mentorship and training. The scholarship
will cover tuition fees, accommodation, and other expenses related to their studies.
“We want to ensure that Catherine’s legacy lives on through the next generation of
journalists,” said Royal Media Services Group Managing Director Wachira Waruru, who
also expressed his deep condolences to the family of Catherine Kasavuli and said that
her passing was a great loss to the company and the entire media industry in Kenya.
