The Principal Secretary in the State Department for Youth Affairs Charles Sunkuli has called on the school leavers to embrace technical training.
Sunkuli said the government, through the Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) centers was offering courses in various trades including plumbing, masonry, electrical installations and motor vehicle mechanics to enable the trainees gain skills for self-reliance.
The PS disclosed that over 30,000 young people had graduated as masters of crafts in various fields and had in turn become trainers of others.
He said the department has focus on socio-economic empowerment of the youth through the Youth Enterprise Development Fund (YEDF)and the Kenya Youth Employment Opportunities (KYEOP) which provide loans and grants to them.
“The YEDF has disbursed over Sh. 4.1 billion to the young people for either starting or expanding their enterprises,” he said.
The PS, who was addressing a Youth Engagement Forum at Friends College Kaimosi in Hamisi sub county, encouraged the youth to ensure they acquire the Information, Communication and Technology (skills) in order to be abreast with the digitization phenomenon.
“The world is experiencing the revolution in ICT and therefore the need for everyone to embrace it so that they are not left behind,” he asserted.
