TVET Institutions urged to support implementation of CBC

Technical, Vocational, Educational and Training Institutions (TVETS) have been called upon to work closely with primary schools in order to support the competence based curriculum (CBC).

This was said by the CEO and council secretary for TVET Curriculum Development Assessment and Certification council Dr. Lawrence Guantai during the official opening of a three-day exhibition workshop for all the TVETS institutions at Kinoru stadium in Meru County.

Dr. Guantai noted that TVET institutions were better placed to complement CBC learning, saying that most of the institutions are practical-oriented, giving learners more opportunities to be innovative and explore various crafts that require constant practice and sharpening.

He added that the curriculum is an improved version of the 8-4-4 system of education that is meant to help learners gain practical skills, values, and competencies that could enable them to think beyond formal jobs.

“We are working closely with small and medium enterprises, the Jua Kali sector and the Federation of Kenya Employers to ensure that CBC does not end up just as a theoretical framework. This can only be achieved by empowering the TVET sector,” said Dr. Guantai.

He also urged students who were unable to make it to the selection by the public universities not to feel all is lost but called upon them to enroll in various TVETS institutions in the country and further their dreams.

“TVET enrollment and selection is not pegged on students’ grades but on skills they possess and therefore everybody has an equal opportunity to develop a career from TVET institutions,” added Dr. Guantai.

In her address, the CEC for Education in Meru County Ms. Linah Nkirote said the TVET institutions were well equipped to offer practical training to various learners and therefore urged the youths to take advantage of the opportunity to acquire skills that would enable them to be self-reliant.
