Vihiga residents to access clean safe water

The Germany Development Bank is funding a water project to the tune of Sh. 19 million in Cheptulu area of Hamisi sub-county.

The project, to be implemented by the Water Sector Trust Fund (WSTF) and Amatsi Water Services Company Ltd, is expected to be completed in 12 months.

Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo, who did the groundbreaking, said the works will entail extension of piping to cover an area 4.8 square kilometres and setting up a 150 cubic metre overhead tank.

Dr. Ottichilo stated that 250 consumer metres would be installed and two water kiosks strategically positioned to serve more than 5,000 residents in Shiru, Muhudu and Kaimosi locations.

The county head observed that his administration has prioritized the provision of clean and safe water to the residents so as to prevent waterborne diseases from affecting the people.

The Chief Officer (CO) for water resources Arnold Mamadi said they have also been carrying out works on springs to ensure the water is kept clean.

Mamadi said they will install solar power for pumping the water from underground in order to cut down on the cost of running the project.

The other such initiative includes the Buhani water project in Mungoma ward in Vihiga Sub County which has a 105,000-litre reservoir stationed in North Maragoli hills from where the water moves by gravity to reach the residents.

There is also Ipali project in Bunyore West, in Emuhaya Sub County that has connected about 100 households to piped water.
