The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) together with the office of the County Commissioner today flagged off a peace caravan in Uasin Gishu County ahead of the coming general elections.
This comes a few weeks after the commission named Uasin Gishu as a likely hotspot for post-general election violence.
Speaking during the event, Commissioner Dorcas Kedogo from NCIC stated that they had held different forums in the county geared towards maintaining peace during the forthcoming general elections.
She added that the commission was keen to ensure that every part of the county was safe and hence the need to keep on sensitising the residents on the importance of peace.
Kedogo also explained that the commission’s naming of the county as a likely hotspot of post-election violence was due to research conducted in the region.
She has stated that they are working with the locals to seek ways of fostering harmony in areas that have been identified as red spots in the county.
“As NCIC we are trying as much as we can to ensure that we have talked with every group, sensitize them so that they can also go sensitize others in a bid to keep away election chaos from erupting,” she stated.
The peace caravan aims to promote peace and unity in the county through a campaign dubbed ‘Elections Bila Noma’
The Senior Assistant County Commissioner, Mokin Arap Tangui who represented Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Stephen Kihara, said that they were pursuing the NCIC plan of elections without chaos, adding that they had conducted different consultative forums across the board to ensure that everyone participates in maintaining peace.
“The preoccupation of the government at the moment together with NCIC is to make sure that the elections are free from violence so that we transit to the next regime with harmony,” Stated Mokin.
He assured the county residents of peace and safety as he explained that at the moment that is the most important issue.
