Residents of three villages in Kiharu constituency will access water supply without interruptions after two mega tanks were commissioned on Thursday.
The tanks, each with a capacity to hold more than 300, 000 litres of water, were commissioned at Kariciungu and Muchungucha areas by acting Water Cabinet Secretary James Macharia.
The two tanks built by Wamatangi Foundation will be able to supply more than 40, 000 homesteads with water for domestic use.
Macharia lauded the project saying Murang’a Water and Sanitation Company (Muwasco) will be able to connect more homesteads with water saying initially the areas suffered shortage of water due to nature of the terrain.
He appreciated the work which was done by Karanja Mburu Wamatangi who sourced for funds from well-wishers to construct the community tanks at areas where water supply was marred by interruption.
“The tanks will ensure local residents get water without rationing and this is a good way to complement what the government is doing to increase water coverage in the country,” said the CS.
He further observed that all water projects the government is doing in the county will be completed even after the Jubilee administration completes its term.
Some of the projects, Macharia said are as a way to compensate the locals for water drawn from Ndakaini dam and northern water collector tunnel.
“The ongoing water projects once completed, water coverage in the county will reach more than 90 percent and residents will have water not only for domestic use but also to do irrigation farming,” he further said.
The CS asked the locals to elect leaders with proven development records and who will ensure the ongoing government projects are completed.
“This is the time for Kenyans to make the right decision by electing development conscious leaders. There is a need to put in a government which will continue with the development that the Jubilee administration has been doing,” he said.
On his part Wamatangi who served as a director of LAPPSET said he did the project in partnership with Muwasco.
He said his foundation has four community tanks each costing close to Sh 7 million stating that Muwasco will connect the tanks with clean water and pipe the water to homesteads.
Wamatangi who is seeking for Kiharu MP Seat added that the water tanks were necessitated by disruption of water supply from the treatment plant which is far from the villages.
“Muchungucha, Mukangu and Kariciungu areas will start getting water without disruption. The mega tanks are of great benefit to the locals,” he added.
Apart from the community tanks, Wamatangi foundation has constructed 102 tanks in schools to help in harvesting rain water.
