Primary school head teachers in Meru County have come together to deliberate on how to improve performance in Mathematics and Social studies following dismal performance in the two subjects in last year’s KCPE national examination.
The teachers under the umbrella of the Kenya Primary Schools Heads Association (KEPSHA) held workshops in Igembe, Tigania, and Imenti regions bringing together teachers in charge of the two subjects for capacity building.
Speaking to Kenya News Agency during a workshop in Kaaga Girls Secondary school, KEPSHA County Chairman Mr Bernard Kiraguh said the idea to hold the workshops was informed by the poor performance in the two subjects which in turn pulled down the County’s general performance.
He said in the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) the county had a mean score of 244.68 with 48.59 in mathematics and 47.99 in social studies.
“The two subjects pulled us down to a mean score of less than 250 and this is the reason we are trying to find ways in which we can improve them and maintain good performance in the other subjects,” said Mr Kiraguh.
He said their main aim was to realise a mean of at least 255 in general and more than 50 percent in the two subjects.
The workshops also brought together sponsors from the private sector including Targeter Publishers, Equity Bank, Solution, and Trans-nation Sacco all who vowed to support the cause to better performance in this year’s examinations.
Targeter Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr Peter Kiarie said the company which mainly publishes learning materials will deploy its experts in the two subjects to mentor the teachers on ways of improving performance.
The company also rewarded the best-performing schools in the county and also motivated the poorest by issuing them with learning materials for free.
“We have made a resolution to support each other in every way possible to ensure that we realise better grades in the future,” said Mr Kiarie.
Solution Sacco marketing manager Ms Loreen Kaimenyi said their institution will continue supporting teachers financially in order to make them better and in return deliver their work.
Her sentiments were echoed by her counterpart from the Trans-nation Sacco Ms Betty Kairuthi who added that they were also exploring possible ways of motivating the teachers as well as the learners in a bid to improve performance in the entire county.
