Machakos County Chief of Staff Lawrence Ngovi has urged parents to invest in their children’s education so as to give them a strong foundation for prosperity.
Ngovi who was speaking during the issuance of bursary cheques at Kinanie ward, in Mavoko sub-county of Machakos said that education is the only inheritance children can obtain from their parents in this time and age.
“Land has become scarce and parents should know that unlike in traditional times, nowadays education has remained the only worthy property a child can inherit from the parents,” he stated.
He said it is through formal education that the youth can make a meaningful contribution to the socio-economic progress of society and the fight against poverty, disease and social ills like drug and substance abuse.
Ngovi noted that parents ought to take the educational pursuits of their children seriously since through education communities can make a meaningful contribution to the social-economic development of the county and country at large.
The County Government of Machakos has partnered with Ausquest Farm Director Stuart Barden to support 316 students from poor backgrounds.
Stuart, a descendant of a farming family in New South Wales, Australia, arrived in Kenya 10 years ago in search of a place to establish a dry land farm and share with Kenyan farmers the great potential in lower rainfall areas.
He used conservation technologies to transform his parcel of land in the dry county into a vast swathe of wheat, chickpea, and green grams.
