Five conmen impersonating as Safaricom dealers in Narok arrested

Police at the Narok town police station have arrested five conmen who impersonate Safaricom employees before stealing money from unsuspecting people.

Narok Central Sub County Police Commander Frederick Shiundu said the five were arrested when selling fake phones to three people, where they gave them fake receipts.

Shiundu said the three enticed people by giving them a free t-shirt after which they ask them to buy their products which they later realized were fake.

Shiundu called on the members of the public who have suffered under the hands of the conmen to volunteer information to his office that will help in carrying out investigations to arrest more criminals.

“These conmen impersonate themselves to be Safaricom or Airtel dealers so that they can sell fake products for them at a very high price,” he said.

The five arrested are James Kasina, Daniel Nzuki, Paul Neno, Antony Githinji and Caroline Wanjiku.

They are expected to be arraigned in court and charged with impersonating to be Safaricom employees and selling fake products without a valid license.

Alex Saruni, one of the people who was conned Sh 25, 000 said he bought a tablet from the criminals after they introduced themselves as Safaricom employees.

Being in need of a phone, Saruni said he walked in the nearby M-Pesa shop and withdrew Sh 25, 000 to buy a new digital phone.

He was issued with a receipt and walked home comfortably.

However, when he got home, the new phone he had bought was not working, forcing him to return to the dealers where he had purchased it.

To his surprise, the dealers refused to listen to him saying once the goods are sold, they can never be returned. Luckily, the police arrived on time and the conmen were arrested.

Another resident Mercy Chelangat said she was conned Sh 1, 500 by the group after they convinced her that she had won some products from the Safaricom end of year gifts.
