Over 150 Kajiado residents have participated in an environment clean up exercise organised by Ngong Hills Mbagathi Water Resource Users Association (WRUA) in collaboration with stakeholders from the national and county government to create awareness on the importance of environmental conservation.
Speaking in Ngong town, the association’s chairman Gideon Senkento called on Kajiado residents to play an active role in environmental conservation efforts to mitigate the negative effects of climate change.
“When we do not clean up our towns, we are the ones who suffer from pollution. We do not have an alternative planet to move to. If we pollute our rivers, we are the same consumers of this water. I urge all residents to take initiative and be responsible in taking care of the environment,” said Senkento.
The Ngong municipality manager David Kubai reiterated the commitment of the municipality to ensure proper disposal and management of waste within the Kajiado municipality areas of Ngong, Kiserian and Ongata Rongai towns.
“As a municipality, one of our key functions is managing waste. We have collaborated with investors in the private sector like Biogas International to recycle waste and convert it into biogas and fertiliser. I would like to encourage the residents to learn to manage their waste from the source to conserve the environment,” said Kubai.
Kubai said the Ngong municipality is collaborating with private stakeholders to clean the rivers within the municipality which form part of the Mbagathi river to prevent the flow of effluent downstream.
