ANDSEA Kenya educates those living with disability in the community

The African Network Development on Sustainable Economic Activities (ANDSEA) Kenya, a community-based organisation has embarked on training people with disabilities (PWDs) in Homa-Bay County about their basic rights.

The training aims at creating awareness among those with disabilities in the county in a bid to improve their dignity, esteem and living conditions.

Speaking to KNA, Maureen Akinyi Odhiambo the Assistant Project Coordinator of the organisation said that their main aim was to create awareness at the grassroot level.

She said they would focus on sexual reproduction and health rights of the individuals as well as the myths associated with disabilities in newborn babies.

The project coordinator said they had divided the disabled in the county into different groups to enable diversity in their education programme.

“Group leaders would attend various educational seminars and in turn venture into the community and educate members of their groups,” she added.

The organisation also supports the PWDs with equipment like car wash machines, salon kits, and barbershop tools so that they can generate income.

She assured those with disabilities that their organisation would fight for their equal treatment in society. This will include lobbying for their employment and facilitation of government tenders.

Odhiambo urged the county government to consider those with disabilities during the hiring of personnel to fill vacancies in the county.
