Building collapses, rescue operations underway

Rescue operations are underway after a three-storey building which was under construction collapsed in Kitengela, Kajiado County.

According to Isinya Deputy County Commissioner Justus Musau, the building collapsed around 8am on Friday morning after several construction workers reported for the day’s work.

While speaking to the media at the site, the DCC said that there were 13 construction workers on site but 11 were able to rush to safety while 2 were stuck in the rumble.

Police and the Kajiado County Emergency response team moved in swiftly and as at 10:30am, one body was already retrieved and taken to Kitengela Sub County Hospital Mortuary.

The second body was retrieved at 12.00pm and was also taken to the Kitengela Sub County Hospital Mortuary but the operation continues to establish if more people could be trapped under the rumble.

Agitated area residents demanded that the building be brought down to avert further loss of lives.

Musau noted that investigations are underway by the relevant authorities to establish the cause of the collapse.

The collapsed building belongs to Flesom Academy affiliated to Trinity Glory Restoration Church.
