County benefits from water programme

Turkana County will continue to benefit from a Swiss funded water programme for the next five years.

County Executive (CEC) for Water Vincent Palor on Thursday said the second phase of Kenya Resilient Arid Lands Partnership for Integrated Development Plus (Kenya Rapid+) a programme for improving water access will run in Turkana for a five years period to November 2026.

“The project whose total investment over the implementation period stands at about Sh143 million will be funded by Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and be jointly implemented by the County Government and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) under the coordination of Millenium Water Alliance (MWA),” Palor said.

Speaking yesterday during the launch of the programme in the company of his counterpart in charge of Agriculture and Pastoral Economy CEC George Emoru, the Water CEC said that the massive project intended to deliver hardware and software products that would enhance sustainable water access solutions and promote environmental conservation for the residents of Turkana.

CEC Palor added that the project document had pointed towards building on the success and lessons learnt during the previous phase as a strategic intervention in addressing the water access gap particularly for the rural communities in Turkana.

Noting the role of water as a catalyst for development of all facets of Agriculture and animal husbandry, CEC George Emoru welcomed the project and said that its approach promoted multiple uses of the precious commodity in line with the needs of Turkana County.

Water Services Chief Officer Moses Natome said that the investment would complement the input of the County Government in improving clean and safe water for multi-purpose use across Turkana since the project was designed to cover the entire county.

Chief Natome expressed optimism that the two project would further strengthen the already cordial working relationship between the Water services and Pastoral Economy departments.
