Vihiga Governor Wilber Ottichilo has pledged to put modalities in place for fostering the socio-economic empowerment of the Persons with Disabilities.
The county head said his government will provide more employment opportunities as well as allocate funds to enable them to engage in the income generating activities.
Dr Ottichilo said the Disability Act was passed by his administration three years ago paving the way for mainstreaming the issues of PWDs.
He said this during a consultative meeting with the Vihiga Society for the Deaf (CSD) representatives, drawn from all the five sub counties.
“The operationalisation of the Disability Act has ensured that the welfare of the PWDs is catered for in the budgeting process,” he stated.
The leader of the delegation, Judith Olesia, appealed to the county leadership to allocate at least five per cent of employment opportunities to the disabled.
Olesia lamented that most of the buildings are not disability-compliant despite the existence of regulations stipulating otherwise.
