Defending Champion Kakamega County Qualifies For Boys Soccer Finals

It was a busy weekend for lovers of sports in Busia County as Busia stadium played host to the provincial primary schools games.

Defending champions Kakamega County are in pivotal position to wrestle the title in boys’ soccer having won their two opening matches including their 2-1 hard fought victory against Busia and Vihiga counties.

Collins Luchesoi and Fabregas Imili were in their own class as they netted goals against Busia and Vihiga teams, whereas a lone goal for Vihiga was netted by Bravin Ayuyo.

Kakamega team coach Stanley Kumia commended the boys for a superb performance they displayed in the ongoing competition.

“Sports is viewed as a universal language that brings people together no matter their origin, background, religious beliefs or economic status. When young people participate in sports or have access to physical education they experience real exhilaration even as they learn the ideals of team work and tolerance,” said Kumia.

The Busia football boys’ team had mixed fortunes winning one match and losing the other. Busia opened their campaign on a poor note, falling 2-1 to Kakamega before trouncing Bungoma 4-1 in the second match with a brace from Jephta Ojiambo with Douglas Oduor and Elvis Meibei accounting for a goal each. In football, Busia girls were held to a 1-1 draw by Bungoma in their opening encounter before losing 0-1 to Kakamega in their second match. Kakamenga registered their second victory trouncing Vihiga 3-0. Bungoma recovered their poise, edging Vihiga 1-0.

Busia volleyball girls, handball boys and girls and netball teams, are a match away to lift the county as the two-day Western Regional Primary School Games comes to an end today (Monday).

The three teams won two matches a piece in the round robin competition, needing to win their last matches to clinch titles in the championships that Busia was to host in 2020 but delayed owing to Coronavirus pandemic.

In volleyball girls, Busia beat Vihiga. 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-8) in the first match before registering the same score of 25-13, 25-7, 25-20 against Kakamega. Busia took on Bungoma in a decisive match to carry the day.

In handball boys, Busia won their two opening matches beating Vihiga 13-10 and Kakamenga 17-7.The girls’ team also won their matches beating Kakamenga 13-6 and Vihiga 26-3.

In netball, Busia beat Bungoma 8-6 and Vihiga 22-02 to keep their hopes alive of clinching the title if they beat Kakamega in their last match. Kakamega edged Bungoma 8-6 in their second game.

Goal shooter Stella Auma of Sigalame Primary and Goal attack of Alupe Primary, Nypha Khaoyi and wing defender Phylis Ndenda of Alupe Primary were star attractions.

FIFA instructor and Football Kenya Federation Busia Branch chairman, Hillary Musundi was tasked with the responsibility of picking the boys football team to represent Western Region in the national championships to be held in Machakos from September 8-13, 2022.
