Dormitory gutted down as seven suspects arrested

A dormitory was gutted down at Ober Boys School, Homa-Bay County Monday causing losses running into millions of shillings.

Following the incident, the Police swiftly apprehended seven students for questioning.

The local Sub County Police Commander Justus Kucha said the students were being detained at Ringa police post after they were suspected to have caused the fire.

The fire affected 167 students who were using the dormitory and their belongings including books and beddings completely burnt.

Kucha said they will interrogate the arrested students to enable them establish the cause of the inferno.

The fire reportedly started when the students were in class and therefore there were no casualties reported.

“The six students are the top suspects because they remained behind when others were in classrooms,” Kucha said

He said attempts by the students and staff to put out the fire and salvage some of their properties proved futile as fire was overwhelming.

Firefighters from Homa Bay county government reached the school later and put out the fire before it could spread to other buildings.

Homa Bay County Director of Education Eunice Khaemba said the suspects will be charged should they be found to have participated in the arson.

She said modalities were being put in place to ensure learning continues uninterrupted.
