Eight in court over illegal firearms in Marsabit

Eight suspects reportedly arrested on Tuesday night with an assortment of illegal firearms have been arraigned in a Marsabit court.

The suspects who were arrested at Manyatta Huqa and Gof Aratha villages in Saku Constituency include Umuro Galgallo Guyo, Adan Hassan Abdi, Hassan Jillo Dida, BadakE Duba Boru, Roba Jarso Diido, Jarso Molu Bilala, Dokata Guyo Dido and Isack Yattani Mamo.

However the suspects, all men, were not required to plead or answer to any charges when they appeared before senior resident Magistrate Simon Arome.

The prosecution requested for more time in order to enable the police to complete investigations and prefer charges against the suspects.

The court did not object to the plea and granted the police 14 days to continue holding the suspects and complete their investigations.

The case against the eight who are accused of being in possession of unlicensed firearms will be mentioned on the 24th of this month.

They were arrested during the ongoing security operation in Marsabit County dubbed “Rejesha Amani Marsabit”.

In the operation at the two villages, security personnel recovered three AK 47 assault rifles, one G3 rifle, one General Purpose Machine Gun- GPMG, 579 bullets, 66 spent cartridges and 500 mills of gun oil among other military items.

The government has thanked members of the public for their support and cooperation during the ongoing operation.

The Eastern regional coordinator Evans Achoki last week warned that the government was determined of getting the county and other parts of the country rid of illicit firearms.

While on an assessment visit to Marsabit, Achoki asked those in possession of illegal firearms to surrender them or risk legal action.
