Joblessness fuels an increase in the demand for cybercrime skills

A new report from Kaspersky’s Digital Footprint Intelligence (DFI) study shows that an increasing number of people are seeking to pursue courses to enhance their hacking skills, due to high extortion sums and unemployment.

The study shows a surge in demand for web development, cyberattack, and design training, which teach individuals how to create malware, compromise corporate infrastructure, and hack companies’ web and mobile applications.

Trainers can earn up to Sh2.49 million per month, demonstrating the lucrative nature of the net job market. The Kaspersky DFI team found that over 155 people were employed full-time to provide training between January 2020 and June 2022.

The report highlights the need for the government to address unemployment and the lack of integrity, as these are some of the reasons behind the increase in demand for these skills.

The vice-president of Kenya Cybersecurity and Forensics Association recommends training individuals to provide defense skills in the online space to counter this trend.

Governments and organizations around the world are taking notice of the rise in cybercrime and are implementing measures to combat it. They are investing in technology and human resources to secure their systems and prevent cyberattacks.

This has created a need for professionals with skills in cybersecurity, who can help prevent and respond to these attacks.

One way to address the issue of cybercrime is through education and training programs. By teaching individuals, the necessary skills to protect against cyberattacks, they can be employed in positions that help secure systems and prevent cybercrime.

These programs can be funded by governments and organizations, or they can be offered by private institutions and universities.

Cybersecurity certifications, such as Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), are becoming increasingly popular as they demonstrate a level of expertise in the field. This can lead to better job opportunities and higher salaries for those who possess these certifications.

Another way to address the issue is through international cooperation and the sharing of information between governments and organizations. By working together, they can better identify and track cybercriminals, and take measures to prevent them from causing harm.

Additionally, international cooperation can lead to the development of common standards and best practices for cybersecurity, helping to ensure the security of all systems worldwide.

In conclusion, the rise in demand for cybercrime training and the increasing frequency of cyberattacks highlights the need for increased focus and resources in the field of cybersecurity. Governments, organizations, and individuals must work together to combat this issue and ensure the safety and security of digital systems worldwide.
